Episode 19: Working On Your Goals for 2021

On this episode of the Jerry & Jacobe Podcast, hosts Jerry and Jacobe discuss what they are working on and where they are at with their 2021 goals. It’s one thing to talk about what you are going to do and how you are going to do it; it’s a whole other thing to actually get stuff done!

• Though Jerry usually listens to his books, he made it a point to both read and listen to Jocko’s book.
• Just like anything else, reading is a skill that takes time to get really good at, but the more you do it, the better you will be.
• Extreme Ownership taught Jerry how to take complete and total responsibility for every situation that he is in.
• Jacobe respects Ray Dalio because he has been able to grow one of the world’s largest hedge funds starting from nothing.
• Ray Dalio attributes his success to staying open-minded and learning from his mistakes by taking calculated risks.
• In the last year, Jacobe has realized that caring what others think of him has been holding him back.
• Looking back, Jerry has found himself playing small to make others comfortable, thus hindering his growth.
• Though in his head Jacobe questions what his clients think of his results, Jacobe knows that there isn’t much truth to it.
• Chasing perfection causes Jacobe to procrastinate, knowing that perfection doesn’t exist.

• Having won 2 world championships in jiu jitsu as a blue belt, Jacobe has the mindset that his knowledge on the subject is very helpful.
• In his last tournament, Jacobe got put to sleep, and he felt comfortable enough to post the video online.
• If you want to make a video go viral, all you need to do is authentically provide value to your viewers.
• Being authentic doesn’t mean you have to be open about your demons, just remain honest about what is going on.
• Gary V and Grant Cardone do the exact same thing but in their own unique ways.
• J.D. Greer’s 90-day challenge in his book Gospel is helping Jerry deal with people and problems in his life.
• Successful people have a morning routine, so Jerry has decided to establish one of his own, starting at 6:30 am.
• Rather than just saying what he’s going to do, Jerry has made the choice to change his daily habits.
• Jerry does his best to stay realistic as to what it takes to be successful in his own life.
• Rather than using his planner as a driving force, Jerry uses it as a tool to help propel him forward.
• Jacobe is focusing more on setting goals with substance behind them rather than just aiming for some number.
• Knowing what is behind the numbers that you are aiming for gives you the fuel to keep going when times get tough.
• With his first child leaving the house, Jerry is excited to see the growth that his son is experiencing on his own.
• This year, Jerry hopes to balance out his busy life by bringing hobbies back into it, such as RC cars and fish tanks.
• Tax-delinquent properties are going to go through the roof this year because of the delay of tax payments allowed by the IRS.
• When marketing to tax-delinquent property owners, Jerry makes sure to present 3-4 options as to what they can do with their property.

1. In Jocko Willink’s book, Extreme Ownership, Jerry learned to take ownership over everything in front of him via 4 methods: cover and move, keep things simple, prioritize and execute, and decentralized command.
2. Jacobe has noticed that even though he tells himself that he doesn’t care what others think, he really does. Going forward, he looks to meet this head-on by remaining vulnerable and confident in his wisdom and experience.
3. It’s incredibly important to have a “why” or reason behind what you are doing. Just aiming for numbers makes it difficult to pull yourself to do more work.
