In this episode of the Jerry & Jacobe Podcast, hosts Jerry and Jacobe discuss why you should follow your commitments rather than your passions. Passion can fade, but your commitments get you to your destination!
Episode Highlights:
- Jerry can’t help but feel like a hypocrite because he has failed to follow his commitments in some areas of his life.
- Throughout his life, Jerry has struggled to stay consistent with his commitment to weight management.
- It’s normal for people to make commitments to get their lives in order around the beginning of the year.
- There were things that Jerry has been excited about throughout his life that he felt passion towards, but only for short periods of time.
- Emotion and passion are strongly linked but tend to fade in the long term.
- Jerry has found that certain passions in his life and the lives of those around him have turned into commitments.
- Through Jiu Jitsu, Jacobe has committed to teaching his sons lessons that will come up later in life.
- Jacobe is more committed to the tangible lessons learned from Jiu Jitsu than the art itself.
- While Jerry has never felt passionate about his jobs in the past, his commitment to those jobs has led to some sort of passion.
- By making a commitment to help others get what they want, Jacobe has been able to get what he wants.
- Choose what definition of commitment reaches you at a deeper level and use that for direction.
- It’s important to focus on something, that being, know where you’re going, or there’s no telling where you’ll end up.
- There’s nothing shameful about getting off track along the way as long as you make the necessary course commitments.
- Even the smallest misdirection at the beginning of a long journey can put you miles away from your target.
- Watching the show Bar Rescue makes Jerry remember that feeling of helplessness that is brought on by mountains of stress.
- Just because you didn’t mean for something to happen doesn’t mean it didn’t happen; face your reality and deal with it.
- We have all started journeys with vague destinations, making it hard to know when we’re off course.
- Don’t let your passions blind you to obvious changes that need to be made.
- Goals without a purpose behind them can lead to wasted time and a feeling of pointlessness.
- You will always have to sacrifice something to attain your goals but don’t sacrifice the things you love.
- Marriage, the ultimate complex commitment, teaches better than most that commitment has nothing to do with your passions.
- After playing football for Air Force, Jacobe made a run at getting into the NFL by working out 3 times a day for a whole year.
- Jacobe’s attempt at getting into the NFL taught him what real commitment looks like, though a lockout got in the way of his dream.
- The trick to becoming successful in real estate is knowing where to find the deals, which is harder than it looks.
- Jerry markets to probate and estate sales, tax delinquent, absentee owners, and pre-foreclosures to find motivated sellers.
- After getting your list of leads, it’s time to make contact, whether that’s through direct mail or other avenues.
- Make sure that you are aware of local regulations regarding how you can reach out to motivated sellers.
3 Key Points:
- There is a strong correlation between passion and emotion, whereas they act as kindling to start the fire but can’t keep it burning. Commitment can act as the fuel to keep it going.
- It depends on the situation whether the passion or commitment comes first, but before both must come purpose.
- While passion can get you started, if aimed in the wrong direction or at the wrong things, it can blind you to the changes that you need to make.
